The Nordic region is good at funding early-stage research. But when companies move towards the market, both capital and value tend to end up in the US. At Investing in Life Science 2026, an investor panel discussed what it would take for the region to build independent global companies, and for European patients to gain access to new treatments.

The panel agreed that the US remains the largest and most profitable market. Even so, a US-only strategy is not as safe as it was five years ago. Most Favored Nation pricing, the Biosecure Act and China’s growing role have changed the game. According to the panel, the biggest obstacle to commercialising new treatments in Europe is the continent’s fragmented market, where some 30 countries have different pricing and reimbursement systems. The discussion covered regulatory alignment between countries, the role of pension funds as long-term capital to support innovation, and how investors will build their portfolios in the coming years.
